Emily Gottreich

Jewish History, Islamic Urban Studies
Emily Gottreich received her Ph.D. in History and Middle Eastern
Studies from Harvard University in 1999. Her research focuses on Moroccan
Jewish history and Muslim-Jewish relations in the broader Arab-Islamic
context. She is author of The Mellah of Marrakesh: Jewish and Muslim
Space in Morocco’s Red City (2006) and co-editor (with Daniel
Schroeter) of the forthcoming book: Rethinking Jewish Culture and
Society in North Africa. Her current research focuses on historicizing
the idea of “the Arab Jew, exploring Jews’ identification
with Arabness in settings ranging from 7th century Arabia to present-day
Israel. The courses she teaches regularly include “Jews and Muslims,” (History
100/MES 130), and Scope and Methods of Research in Middle Eastern Studies
(MES 102).
