The Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens Memorial Fund for Middle Eastern Studies

On September 11, 2013, the family and friends of Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens announced the creation of The Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens Memorial Fund for Middle Eastern Studies to honor the memory of Ambassador Stevens, who died in Libya on Sept. 11, 2012. The fund is dedicated to deepening and extending knowledge of the Middle East and North Africa, particularly in the areas of culture, language, politics, and history. The fund will support research and travel by graduate and undergraduate students who demonstrate a high level of distinction in the study of the Middle Eastern and North Africa.

Scholarship Information

Eligibility

UC Berkeley undergraduates whose course of study focuses primarily on the MENA region in any discipline, or graduate students in Master’s or Ph.D. programs whose work focuses on the Middle East and North Africa.

Previous Stevens Scholar grants recipients and students who will graduate prior to their proposed research trip are welcome to apply but will be given lower priority.

Funding

Grants for up to $5,000 are available to defray the cost of international travel to conduct research on Middle East-related topics or to support overseas study of Middle Eastern languages.

Application Deadline

The application deadline for the 2024-2025 academic year competition is Wednesday, January 31, 2024. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.  

Requirements for applying: 

1. Cover letter, detailing proposed project or course of study, not to exceed 2 pages
2. Budget, including all expenses to be covered by the grant
3. Proposed itinerary, including all destinations and tentative dates of travel
4. A letter of recommendation (sent directly by recommender to cmes@berkeley.edu)
