Collecting information on the maps:
This
phase included bibliographic research on the city's history,
atlases, map makers and travelers' accounts.
Collecting the maps:
After
the existence of these maps was verified, originals and
copies provided by different libraries including UCB library,
Moffiet library, Stanford library, and the national
library of France. Originals and books were scanned. All
these maps are currently in the public domain.
Enhancing the maps
This
phase included three main tasks:
1-
Scanning
the maps using an optical scanner ( A2 size) with a configuration
of 400 DPI color for the colored maps and
B&W for the B&W maps
2-
Using Photoshop
software release 5 (As a photo editor) to
enhance the scanned maps. Correcting scratches and cut-outs
of the maps using the images tools together with applying
Color correction, Color replacement, Contrast, Sharpness,
Curves and channels to enhance the maps in the RGB color.
After applying the different effects, I generated a master
images for every map with a file size between 50-70 MB
with a resolution of 400DPI.
3-
Transferring
all map files to index color to Produce Web
maps. I generated two versions of every map ( one sized
at 350X200 pixels with resolution of 100 DPI, and the
other sized at 850X600 pixels with 100 DPI, both are in
JPG format.)
