  Dr. Hicham Safieddine, University of British Columbia

Dr. Hicham Safieddine is an Assistant Professor in the History Department at the University of British Columbia and author of ‘Banking on the State – the Financial Foundations of Lebanon,’ which was published in July 2019 by Stanford University Press on the eve of popular protests which toppled the government. Lebanon has subsequently experienced a financial collapse described by the World Bank as one of the worst economic crises since the 1850s. Dr. Safieddine will explain the origins of the crisis and what is being done. He researches global and national monetary regimes and financial orders and has been published in The Toronto Star, Al-Jazeera English, The Monthly Review, Le Monde Diplomatique, Al-Adaab, Middle East Eye, Egypt Independent, Assafir, Jadaliyya, and Al-Ahram Weekly.
