Program Components and Eligibility

UC Berkeley faculty, lecturers, academic staff, and graduate students may apply for funding in the following categories:

1. Research Grants

Up to $2,000 to cover the cost of travel for modern Middle Eastern language study, dissertation research, or faculty projects.

2. Conference Grants

Up to $600 to cover to cover the cost of travel to attend conferences in the U.S. and up to $1,500 for conferences abroad. Please note that this funding applies to airfare only.

Please note that both types of grants are disbursed as stipends or through internal accounting transfer into research accounts.

Application Deadline

The application deadline for the Spring competition is Monday, February 17, 2020.  The Fall competition covered travel between October 1, 2019 and March 31, 2020. We are no longer accepting applications for the Fall 2019 competition. The Spring 2020 competition covers travel between April 1, 2020 and September 31, 2020. The application deadline for the Fall 2020 competition is Monday, November 2, 2020.

A complete application includes 1) Your name, department, address, phone, email, and UCB ID number; 2) A short statement (1-2 pages) describing the research project, or an abstract of your accepted conference paper; 3) The letter of acceptance and/or conference program in which the paper appears; 4) A complete project budget indicating the total amount of funding that you are requesting. Include an airfare price quote from a travel agent or website, and please note any other funding sources to which you have applied, including Committee on Research funding; 5) A letter of recommendation (graduate students only).

Please include your name on every page of the application. Applications should be submitted as a single PDF via email to cmes@berkeley.edu with “Mellon Application Spring 2020” in the subject line.
