Anthropology

Banan Abdelrahman is a Ph.D. student at the University of California, Berkeley's Department of Anthropology. Before entering the program, she completed her master’s degrees in Women & Gender Studies and Migrant & Refugee Studies at the American University in Cairo. At AUC, she worked alongside migrant communities to unpack questions of bureaucratic navigation, smuggling, NGO-ization, securitization, community imagination, and history & memory. Building on her time in Cairo, she hopes to continue working with migrant communities, particularly those trekking precarious journeys, on issues surrounding articulations of the self and its navigation, especially as one moves through the borderlands. Her focus will also be on south to south migration routes and urban centers, while also delving into the digital imaginations that emerge along the way.
