The Graduate Reading Group in Islamic Texts gathers once a week for close readings of advanced texts in Islamicate languages. Each semester a major classical or postclassical work is selected from disciplines such as philosophy, physics, astronomy, theology, legal theory. The participants must have an advanced grasp of relevant language(s) such as Arabic or Persian. Since this is a closed group engaged in deep reading of specialized material, participation is subject to the approval of the CMES. Please contact the Group Organizer S. Shiraz Ali at firstname.lastname@example.org.
For Fall 2020, the Group is engaged in a close reading of Al-Tadhkirah fi ʿilm al-hayʿa, an influential Arabic treatise in theoretical astronomy by Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī (d. 1274).
