Faculty Exchange at EHESS

Each year, one faculty affiliate of CMES will be selected for a one-month long professorship at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, France as part of EHESS's Invited Professors Program. The specific period of the visit will be determined in coordination with the sponsoring EHESS faculty and in view of the EHESS’ academic calendar. The Berkeley faculty must be free of university duties during the period of the visit.

The general period of visit for this year’s competition is between October 1, 2026 and May 312027, excluding periods when the EHESS is not in session.

The deadline for applications is January 31st, 2026.

Questions can be directed to cmes@berkeley.edu.

Fellowship Details

The Invited Professors Program is one of the most prestigious flagship programs of EHESS. It aims to develop the School's international relations and raise its global profile. It has three main objectives:

  • To contribute to the diversity of the School's educational offerings. Each invited professor leads at least four seminars during their stay and participates in the scientific life of the School and the host laboratory.
  • To contribute to the development of EHESS's international networks.
  • To provide EHESS faculty and students with a chance to engage leading international scholars.

All applications are evaluated by a commission composed of members of the Scientific Council. Evaluation criteria include the past scholarly contributions and research proposal of the invited colleague, the proposed lectures and seminars, potential for participation in the activities of the School and the host laboratory, and the absence of conflicts of interest. The commission's proposals are then presented to the Scientific Council. The list of accepted applications is subject to a vote by the General Assembly of Faculty in the spring.

Eligible invited professors must hold a status equivalent to that of a lecturer, research officer, professor (at any rank), or research director in their home country. Emeritus professors are also eligible.

Any professor who has benefited from a one-month invitation to EHESS can only be invited again under the "Invited Professors" program after a five-year waiting period.

Support

The invited professor will receive a stipend, in the amounts noted below, from the EHESS for the period of the one month stay. The invited professor is responsible for securing their flights and housing. The EHESS will offer office space, research support, library access, and general orientation during the visit.

  • Rank of Full Professor: 143 euro per day (4,004 euro for the month)
  • Rank of Assistant or Associate Professor: 133 euro per day (3,724 euro for the month)

Any stay shorter than 28 days will lead to a pro-rata calculation of the per diem for the number of days the colleague is present.
